Nigeria edges closer to last eight as Pharaohs reaches quarter. - January 16,2010

  Nigeria enhanced their chance of reaching the last eight of the Africa Cup Nations going in Angola with a 1-0 win over Benin.

After losing their opening game to defending champion the pharaohs of Egypt, Amodu Shaibu the super Eagles coach made changes to his starting line up as they faced the Benin team,  Osaze Odimwegie the super Eagles knew that the only way to revive their hope of reaching the last eight is the to beat Squirrel. In the 42nd minute Yakubu Aiyegbeni gave Nigeria the lead through spot-kick when a Benin defender Boco handled Osaze Odimwegie’s header in the box.

Nigeria last group match will be against Mozambique, the last time both side met in the World Cup/ Africa Cup Nations qualifying Nigeria, the host ran away with a slim 1-0 victory.

 

Egypt 2-0 Mozambique  

In the other game, after a convincing 3-1 win over a disappointed Nigeria team, Africa Cup of nations defending champions Egypt booked their place in the last eight with 2-0 victory over the mambas of Mozambique. Egypt last game is againt Benin, win or lose the pharaohs are through.
