Death threats issued to Santa Fe coach - June 30,2009

Incoming Santa Fe coach Ruben Israel has fled Columbia after being issued a death threat on Monday.

Israel—having just replaced Hernan Dario Gomez at the club—had yet to manage a single game when he began receiving menacing calls on his mobile. The caller threatened to “blow away” Israel and his family if the 51-year-old did not make a place in the squad for 26-year-old defender Francisco Najera. Curiously, the player has now left the club as well.

Santa Fe president Armando Farfan tried in vain to coax Israel into staying at the capitol side, but will now restart the search for a new head coach.
