Jon Mikel Obi is set to sign a new five-year contract at Stamford Bridge. Although his current deal runs through to the end of next season, Chelsea were forced into offering an extension after Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho expressed interest in the 22-year-old.
“He will sign the deal,” confirmed John Shittu, Mikel’s agent. “Some of the club officials were away, but they were expected back last weekend. As soon as everybody is in, we will sign the new contract.”
Terms have not yet been disclosed, but it’s believed that Mikel will earn upwards of £70,000 per week over the duration of the contract.
“It is a very good deal for him and would put him on par with some of the top earners in the club,” said Shittu.
Mikel had a break-out season for the Blues in 2008/2009 and is hoping to earn regular first-team football under new Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti.
