Monomotapa continues Champions' League success - July 22,2009
Monomotapa United’s improbable run in the African Champions’ League claimed another scalp on Saturday. Daniel Kamungenga’s goal in the second minute paced the Zimbabwean side to a 2-1 win over 2007 Champions’ League winners Etoile du Sahel in Harare.
The Munoz held their one-goal lead until Ahmed Akaichi equalized for la Brigade Rouge just six minutes after the restart. But Darryl Nyanadro’s strike in the 55th minute restored Monomotapa’s advantage, and they held on to pull off the upset.
Monomotapa will next play on August 1 against Heartland in Owerri, Nigeria. Heartland were beaten 2-0 by TP Mazembe in the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening Group B match.
Monomotapa began their unanticipated string of results by overcoming Tanzanian runners-up Miembeni 3-2 on aggregate in February. They then advanced over Ajax Cape Town on away goals before qualifying for the Group phase by beating Mimosas 2-1 on aggregate in the Second Round.
