Toronto suffers late loss at Columbus - July 26,2009
Toronto FC were stung by a late Jason Garey winner as the host Columbus Crew came from behind to beat the Reds 3-2 at Crew Stadium on Saturday.
Garey, a former Hermann Trophy winner, headed Frankie Hejduk’s cross past Toronto goalkeeper Stefan Frei with two minutes elapsed in stoppage time, extending the Crew’s home unbeaten streak to 19 matches. Steven Lenhart had scored the equalizer 16 minutes earlier, capitalizing on Frei’s ill-timed charge to stab the ball into the back of the net with his right foot. The 22-year-old has two goals and an assist in two matches since coming into Robert Warzycha’s lineup for the injured Guillermo Barros Schelotto last week.
Toronto, meanwhile, looked to be heading for the victory when Canada international Ali Gerba scored his first goal in a Reds jersey shortly after the restart. Capitalizing on a poor goal-kick from Will Hesmer, the 27-year-old broke in alone on the Columbus defense with Chad Barrett—the latter providing the ball on a platter for Gerba to lash past the baffled goalkeeper.
Dwayne De Rosario had earlier cancelled Eddie Gaven’s 32nd-minute opener with his seventh goal of the campaign. With 26 points from 19 matches, Toronto are now fourth in the Eastern Conference—two points adrift of DC United and four points back of MLS champions Columbus.
