Lyon have signed Bafetimbi Gomis from St. Etienne and will be relying on the 23-year-old to shoulder much of the goal-scoring burden abandoned by Karim Benzema.
Gomis—a France international of Senegalese descent—scored eight goals for Les Verts last season as the Loire side narrowly avoided relegation to Ligue 2. With St. Etienne accepting a 13 million euro offer from Lyon on Thursday, he will make the short, 60 kilometre journey to the Stade Gerland, where he will join a host of other new Lyon signings.
The deposed French champions have already signed Lisandro Lopez, Michel Bastos and Aly Cissoko. The purchase of Gomis puts their summer spending at approximately 70 million euros.
