Arsenal, Villa and Bayern lift preseason trophies - August 3,2009
Arsenal, Aston Villa and Bayern Munich won preseason silverware at the weekend, claiming the Emirates, Peace and Audi cups, respectively.
Following Saturday’s 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid, Arsenal dispatched Rangers 3-0 in the Emirates Cup final on Sunday thanks to a pair of goals from 17-year-old midfielder Jack Wilshere. Croatian striker Eduardo also scored for the Gunners. Russian international Andrei Arshavin scored both goals for the London side against Atletico.
In Spain, Aston Villa beat Juventus on penalties to lift the Peace Cup. Vincenzo Iaquinta, Alessandro Del Piero and Nicola Legrottaglie missed their penalties for the Bianconeri after a scoreless draw in Seville. Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar converted the winning penalty for Villa.
Bayern Munich also required spot kicks to overcome Manchester United in the Audi Cup final. After beating AC Milan in the semifinal, the Bundesliga runners-up converted seven penalties while United defenders Patrice Evra and Johnny Evans missed their attempts. United had qualified for the final after beating Boca Juniors 2-1.
