Two sides unbeaten in African Champions League - August 3,2009
Kano Pillars and Al-Hilal are the only unbeaten sides remaining in the Group Phase of the African Champions League.
Pillars, the reigning Nigerian champions, were 3-1 winners at home to Sudan’s Al-Merreikh on Friday in Kano. Victor Namo scored twice for the hosts in the opening half, and Moses Ogaga rounded out the scoring in the 89th minute after Idahor had pulled the Red Devils to within a goal just prior to the hour-mark. A day earlier, Sudanese runners-up Al Hilal got an early goal from Usama Altawon to see off ZESCO United in Khartoum.
Both Pillars and Al-Hilal have four points from two rounds in Group A, although the Nigerians top the group through goal differential. ZESCO United and Al-Merreikh are level at one point apiece.
In Group B, Zimbabwean champions Monommotapa United were finally beaten after advancing unscathed through all of the Champions League’s preliminary and qualifying rounds. Daniel Kamungega’s fourth goal of the tournament was all Monomotapa could muster at Heartland, who ran out to a third-minute lead through Ike Thankgod. Uche Agba and Ikechukwu Ibenugbu also scored for the Naze Millionaires. In the bracket’s other contest, Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahale came from behind to beat TP Mazembe of DR Congo.
All four Group B rivals have three points and three goals scored from two rounds, although Mazembe’s two goals against is better than the three conceded by Etoile and Heartland and four by Monomotapa.
