Barcelona are mulling a shock move for Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
The Catalan giants’ sporting director Txiki Begiristain divulged his plans to Spanish daily Marca, saying, “If we spend a lot of money, it is possible [to buy Fabregas]. We do not know how much it will be yet. We have not asked Arsenal.”
Fabregas is thought to be increasingly frustrated at the Gunners’ failure to win a trophy since 2005—his first season as a regular in Arsene Wenger’s lineup. The recent departures of Mathieu Flamini, Alexandre Hleb, Thierry Henry and Kolo Toure have only furthered his exasperation, and he has already stated a desire to return to Barcelona at some point in his career. He came through the ranks at the Nou Camp between 2000 and 2003.
Although contracted to Arsenal until 2014, the 22-year-old will probably reevaluate his future at the Emirates Stadium after the World Cup, if he hasn’t already.
